Haggai 1:3-4, 25 (NIV)
3 Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?”
25 Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways.
This was a prophetic word to the exiles who came back to their homeland after 70 years of captivity in Babylon. Many of those exiles -in fact most of them- decided to stay back. But those whose heart were stirred by the Spirit of God, decided to return to their land of promise. They came back with the intention of rebuilding the temple of God. With great excitement and enthusiasm, they started the building program. They even laid the foundation. But after two years starting the building program, it was halted. There was growing opposition from the enemies and from the government. The people’s enthusiasm slowly died off. Their attention was diverted to other things. Now they were more concerned about building their own fortunes rather than rebuilding the house of God. That was time God spoke through His prophet. This is also very prophetic for our times. People of God are so much consumed with their own stuff and have little or no concern about the things of God. In the New testament times, we are the Temple of God because of the Spirit of God inhabits us!

1 Corinthians 3:16-17
16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
Solomon spent (in today’s dollar value) close to 500 billion dollars to build the temple -the most expensive structure ever built by human hand! He valued the presence of God that much. How much do we value the presence of God in our lives? Are we paying that much attention to His presence? We are His temple! We need to take care of this temple!
